Veteran campaigner Gilberto Pereira dos Santos became a World Boxing Federation (WBF) Champion in his second attempt on Saturday, June 16, when he won the vacant South America Middleweight title at the Campo de Goias Stadium in Goiania, Brazil.

Pereira dos Santos had come up short last October in a fight for the same title, when he was stopped in six rounds by undefeated Alan Emmanuel Castano from Argentina, but this time, fighting in his home-town, he would not let the opportunity pas him by as he out-boxed another Argentinian in Abel Adriel.

Twelve years the younger man at twenty-eight, Adriel had come to fight his chance but Pereira dos Santos boxed very well and kept the visitor at bay with straight punches from the outside, and mixed things up with well-timed hooks to body and head.

After ten rounds of boxing the former Brazilian national titlist was awarded a well-deserved unanimous decision by scores of 99-91, 98-92 and 95-95, improving his professional record to 15-7 (10). Adriel travels back to Buenos Aires at 21-18-3 (5).
